Despite the fact that over 50% of payments to health care providers are value-oriented today, we are still seeing adoption of bundled payment stalled. Given that bundled payment has been shown to control health care costs and improve quality for episodes of care and specific conditions, employers and other health care purchasers have increasingly pushed health plans or partnered with other vendors to implement these programs. However, we still have a long way to go until this model reaches its full potential.
In December of 2018, we kicked off Collaborative 6: “Advancing Effective Bundled Payment” to help employers and other health care purchasers make headway on a bundled payment strategy.
Participants
Four participants joined us in the collaborative, ready to implement or expand a bundled payment program. In addition, Marc Berg, former Partner at McKinsey & Company, served as our subject matter expert.
Description of our work
During this 10 month Collaborative, CPR, its subject matter expert, and group participants met monthly to level set on the current state of bundled payment and barriers to implementation, learned about best-in-class program scope and design, and set clear expectations as a group for what employers wanted to see from health plans and third-party vendors moving forward. Using the evaluation questions and criteria the group established, CPR evaluated the marketplace of solutions.
